(in part).
To summarize the taxonomic suggestions of the study of the series of specimens from Hong Kong and vicinity, they lead towards the following tentative conclusions :
First, that Balania Harlandii (Hook.), V.T. is decidedly variable in habit and colour; second, that all the Balania-type of species of the Sino- Japanese areas, having rhizome (or tubercles) devoid of pustules may, at least provisionally, be arranged under it; third, that Bivolva may be con- sidered to be the typical section of the genus Balania, which indeed was founded on the same type species as was Bivolva,
The arrangement and extreme reduction of species of the Balania and Bivolva groups, occurring in the region from the eastern Himalayas to Japan and Formosa, to be proposed (see also Valeton, 1913, p. 170) as a possibility may be tabulated as follows:
BALANIA Van Tieghem (1896, p. 297).
